The actual story here is a protest by European dairy farmers over falling milk prices. One shudders to think what might have happened to those police if they had not had riot shields! As the caption at the Wait Wait blog points out, what if one of them had been lactose intolerant?

Such an awesome photo. The situation with the dairy farmers in Europe, however, is pretty terrible. With the continuously falling milk prices, dairy farmers can barely cover their production costs (let alone make any type of profit). And these farmers blame the EU and its lack of price regulation for the current situation.
